I have a stash of floss that I found at a market sale but the shades are not those listed on the instructions.
Do you think that it matters what shades of pink or blue are used ?

Blue Ribbon for PDG Quilt

I am very happy to report that I won a blue ribbon at the Ellis County Quilt Show this past weekend for my Polka Dot Girls quilt! I NEVER expected that I would win first place, even though I love it. I had a hard time machine quilting it and made it up as I went. But I am very happy!

Hang in there girls! It is worth all the effort.

FINISHED QUILT

I finally finished my Polka Dot Girls quilt!!! And, I have entered it in a quilt show to be held July 16 and 17 in Midlothian, Texas. I love it, however, I'm not real happy with the quilting I did. But, I did the best I could and it is finished! I haven't entered a quilt in a show for about 10 years because I never had much confidence that my quilts were good enough. But, I guess my quilts are just as good as some I have seen in shows, so I'm going for it. I'm also entering my tumbler quilt which you can see here.

Fabric Selection

I've been lurking for almost a year now, intimidated by fabric selection and working on improving my stitching before I make such a beautiful quilt. I'm currently working on "Among Friends" from another Brownyn-Hayes book. I'm not real good at choosing good fabric combinations and for that reason have fallen in love with charm packs and layer cakes. Could anyone tell me if a layer cake would work for the fabric of this quilt?

When I started my quilt I only had the correct amount of stitchery background so I was very careful where I stored it so that I wouldn't be tempted to use it for something else by mistake. When our daughter told us her and her husband were expecting a baby I was so excited and I wanted to make something straight away. I think you might guess what I am going to say - I used what was left of my stitchery background without even thinking. I now have to start my stitcheries again. It is not so bad as I so enjoyed stitching them but the thought of starting again is a bit daunting and I have so many other things (especially baby things) to make. I plan this weekend to start on block 1 again so hopefully I can post a photo of Block 1 (series 2) in the New Year...Linda

The First Two Little Blocks

First of all, thank you for letting me join the Polka Dot Stitchery Group. I have enjoyed looking at this blog for sometime now and it is what prompted me to purchase the pattern when I went to the big quilt show in Chicago in April. I am just now starting the sticheries and they are fun and just as cute as can be.

I at first was going to do them with the colors listed, then thought of redwork (or any single color). However, when I sent for a packet of charm squares and a "layer cake" by Moda I thought it would be perfect for this project. That's when I thought about doing the blocks in all shades of red, pink, coral, etc., and just a touch of an orangy yellow here and there.

So above are the two little blocks that I have completed and also some of the fabrics in the packets that I will be using. I am working on the girls in block one now and will post that when it is finished. These are lots of fun!!

I have about half of the quilt quilted and I'm don't know if I'm happy with it or not. My machine quilting skills are not the best, but you have to do it to get the practice.
I'm wondering if anyone has pictures of a completed quilt out there. I would love to see how someone else quilted theirs. I'm glad I'm almost finished with this so I can move on to other projects!!!

Eg er eit nytt medlem i denne gruppa Eg kjøpte mønsteret rett før påske frå Lapp Elisa Quilt i Sverige. Har vore litt svak for desse damene ei stund og fann ut at eg kunne kanskje bruke litt rester både av stoff og tråd. Blokk 1 i Polka Dot Girls er no ferdig montert. Har berre litt igjen på stitcheryet på blokk 2 så er den også klar. min versjon har fått ein litt eigen vri, alle tekstane er omsett til nynorsk.

I'm a new member in this group. I bought the pattern just before eastern from Lapp-Elisa Quilt in Sweden. Have had a passion for this girls for a long time. The first block in the Polka Dot Girls are put together, and block two is closing up. Just a little stitchery left before I put it together. In my versjon all text are in norwegian.

Well, I finished 2 squares for my Polka Dot Girls and I must say, it is so

satisfying. Thank you all for your pictures - when I got stuck, I went to your pictures to help me out.

I have never done the back stitch correctly and after all these years, I

decided to leave well enough alone. I use the stem stitch. You can see I do try the backstitch in tight places, but it's not as perfect as I would like it to be.

Yeah!!! I got going yesterday and just couldn't stop! Now, I will be able to take it to my quilters guild meeting tonight for show and tell! I'm pretty happy at how it turned out. I don't know when I will get around to quilting it, but hopefully in the next couple of months.

We leave for 2 weeks in Oregon in one week, so I will only be doing hand work during that time. When I get back I have a doll quilt to finish and then I'll have to think about what else I will work on. While in Oregon I'll be stopping at the famous Stitchin Post in Sisters, OR as well as some other quilt shops. I'll try to get pictures!

OK, ladies, I'm finally getting back to the PDG quilt! Since me and needle turn applique do not mix very well, I decided to use Wonder Under and machine applique the hearts. I have them finished, the stitchery is all finished and I am hoping to get the top put together before we leave for Oregon on March 16. I think the hardest part is over! Yippee!!

stitcheries forever. Just love them.
I am now busy with the Polka Dot Girls
and doing all the stitchery in purple.

Hello every member of this group.I have been admiring your blocs for some time, and at last I have desided to join you. I started on my Polka Dot Girls quilt some years ago as a BOM from Katrines quiltestue. But after two blocs , it became a wisp. I cant understand why..... But after a god friend told me she are making the quilt I got a restart. And here I'm .

These are the tree blocs I have done so far.This are my january block this year, and my new start. The one above and the one below are old one. I do all my stitching on cotton batting after I have done the whole block.And I use a brown Pigma Micron 005 pen to all the drawing.It is permanent but the thread cover the fine lines.
I will be back in februar with my next block done. By telling you my decision I have made a pressure for myself. So now it has been a MUST DO item.Untill then ; happy stitching with all your great blocs. ;-)

Marking Pens - General Discussion

So far we have discussed fabric and stabilizer.

Now, let's talk about pens. What kind of pen or marker do you use? Do you use a light box to trace? Do you do all your tracing at one time? Any disasters with marking?

I use a brown .05 permanent marker by Sukura and a light box my husband made. The directions on most patterns suggest you tape the pattern to the light source, then tape the fabric to that. I just tape the fabric to the pattern, which makes the set mobile. I like to twirl/move my work so I get smoother lines.

I'm so grateful to Raedene and you all, for accepting ma in this group (which I discovered very recently, while browsing from blog to blog - you all know that story - ;>)

Actually, I've got that beautiful pattern for more than one year, but I only stitched some designs separately, up to now (hereunder are some pictures).

I made this one for a stitchery swap

and another for the label on the back

I also used a PDG as a decoration on a bag

and on a toilet purse

Now I think the time has come to start working on the entire project. These cute little ladies really deserve it, don't they ? Of course, being part of this group will e a GREAT source of inspiration and encouragements !

I still don't know whether 'm going to stitch them in all colors, or rather choose redwork I'm thinking about a DMC variegated thread). I'm giving myself until January 1ST to make a final decision. All suggestions will be heartfully welcome !

PDG Blocks #3

I finally finished this Flower Basket, which is part of PDG Blocks #3. I have been so busy with work and Christmas gifts that I have not had that much time to dedicate to these blocks. I am currently working on the My Sewing Chair and hope to have it finished this weekend.

These blocks are so much fun to do and I do them as relaxation while I watch a little television. I will be attending a sit and sew on Saturday and plan to bring along to finish up.

Well, here is the second stitchery for my PDG blocks! Although I'm redoing the first one so I guess technically this is only my first one complete that's going into my quilt. Now I'm off to trace the pattern for the forget me not stitchery (again) and get started on that. Then finally I'll be able to start working on the big stitchery for this set! :0)

And I've come up with a plan to get more stitching done! I brought my stitching to my computer with me and while I'm waiting for a website to come up, I take a few stitches. I think I was doing more stitching than surfing this morning though. :0)

I was curious about this so I did a Google search and this is what I found: Ecology Cloth is a much higher thread count muslin, perfect for piecing, hand applique, inking, embroidery and photo transfer. I found this information here.

PDG Block #2 Finished!

Tonight I finished sewing together block #2. Now I need to trace the stitcheries for Block #3. I am enjoying these stitcheries so much and I am thankful to have such wonderful friends support. Without the support, I would probably not finish these at all.

Tonight I finished the first little stitchery for my Polka Dot Girls. But the interfacing I used was too stiff and it caused some problems. So I'm just looking at this as a learning experience for me and I'll redo the stitchery again with the softer backing. And just when I thought I was making some progress!

I have had this pattern for a while now and it is always in the back of my mind as something I must do, so when I stumbled across Raedene's blog I knew this would be the way to get me motivated to begin. So after asking Raedene if I could join your group I raced off to the sewing room and organised my fabric and threads. I then headed off to my local and purchased the stitching fabric. So, now I am all set. I just need to trace a couple of stitcheries and I will have begun my great Polka Dot adventure!!!

I am currently working on some more of the girls (not sure what to call them yet) but in applique. New quilt (coming along slowly as I am stumped for ideas at the moment) and a line of bags featuring the "Girls" in applique. So all ideas (good or bad) are gratefully recieved. I got the video "Sex in the City" out last night and was thinking that maybe the "Girls" could do with an upmarket make-over with more vampy clothes like the clothes in the movie- particularly the hat Samantha wore with the extra-enormous brim! Gorgeous! But I'm not at all sure about that!

Anyway- ideas would be good.

Thank you for letting me join your group. I am hoping it will help keep me focused on getting these blocks finished.
I'm going on a shop hop next week and I am, of course, going to be looking for fabrics to compliment the stitcheries. I'll post again when I'm closer to getting started. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

I think I may be one step closer to starting my Polka Dot Girls. I went through my fabric and found some pieces I think I want to use to go along with the sticheries. I'm taking these with me to the fabric store tomorrow to see if I find anything that goes with these or anything I like better. I'm really trying to use out of my stash rather than buy new whenever I can right now. That's what I did when I went to look for fabric for the stitcheries themselves. Then once I got the first one traced I didn't like the fabric at all. So now I've found something else and I'll just try again.

PDG Block #2

Last night I finished this little stitchery that is part of Block #2. I traced the larger block, but have not started it yet. Jan and I are doing these as a block of the month, but since I work full time, I have to get a head start on some of the blocks so that I can keep up.

I am really enjoying working on these blocks, and it is so much fun to have a support team to keep me going. I am adding this picture of PDG Block #1 that I finished last week. My fabrics are the Moda Charisma line and I love how they are a great compliment to the stitcheries.

I purchased the pattern from Treasured Threads and the DMC from Joann's. The fabric choice is still up in the air. I have Sweet Romance in my stash, but also like Moda's Charisma (See Deb). I ordered two Layer Cakes and will make up my mind when they arrive. I think the background will be an off white with polka-dots.
